Aww L-O-V-E.... I believe it should be celebrated anytime of the year...365 each and every day of the year! I also believe it shouldn't be all about the guys. Meaning the guys have all the work to do. Gals, you should do something nice and special too.
There is a story I think of often this time of year. I'll never forget. Johnny was working in Corporate America. A rather large insurance company. He was in management and he worked with a lot of women.
He came home from work one day and proceeded to tell me about his day. Or rather how he perplexed a bunch of women at his office. The many talents of Johnny is to mess with people in general.
He said that the woman were gathered around at a cubicle discussing the upcoming V-Day...Valentines. Johnny overheard their conversation. (As he says, they were discussing loudly) One gal says that her boyfriend better get her jewelry this year. She wanted diamonds. Another gal pipes in in agreement that her husband better not come home unless he has a small box that holds jewelry. Johnny explains that these women were not talking inexpensive items but rather expensive purchases.
This continued on for a few more minutes as they drank their morning cup of coffee when Johnny finally decided to join in the conversation. "What are you doing for your husbands and boyfriends this Valentines?" Johnny asks. They all turn around in confusion...then indignant. Again, Johnny states "Yes, what are you doing for them for Valentines?" Needless to say, Johnny is not making any friends right now.
One gal says "It isn't about them!" Another gal speaks up..."Its Valentines Day, its about us." Johnny disagrees..."Isn't Valentines Day about them too?"They looked at him...a guy... as if he had three eyes. They rolled their eyes and turned around continuing their conversation.
Johnny, without hesitating and ensuring all the woman could hear..."Well, maybe if you treated them (the men in their lives) better you wouldn't be having this conversation and you would be enjoying the gifts you are complaining you don't have!" The guy in the next office obviously listening to the whole conversation snorts and coughs in his coffee when hearing Johnny's last response.
Ya know, he's right. It isn't about the girl...its about both. I am also a big believer that love isn't about one day a year but 365 days a year. You shouldn't need a holiday to tell the one in your life how much they mean to you and how much you love them.
I balked at the thought of men spending so much money on Valentine's Day for roses The roses that will go down in price after the holiday is over. The same roses that you could purchase prior to the holiday at a cheaper price...You don't have to spend tons of money to tell someone how much you love them! I explained to Johnny that all I needed was a handwritten note, I was good. It meant more to me than anything he could buy.
You don't need to spend money just because it's Valentine's Day. Of course now, I am in the business of selling items for holidays, events, birthdays, weddings, etc, and also Valentine's Day. Whatever you choose to do, do it because you want to and it makes you happy. If you feel pressure to purchase something...that is NOT making you happy, don't do it. You shouldn't feel that way. Do whatever fits your style and your budget and timing.
