Johnny's Junk Shack @ Thieves Market

Johnny is at it again....He's been collecting and buying. Now he wants to sell. We will be heading to the cool & famous Thieves Market this Saturday March 4th from 8AM-3PM. It's going to be a gorgeous day with lots of sunshine and warmer weather.

IMG_1117.jpg

Johnny will have interesting finds such as vintage glassware, all kinds of ephemera, vintage ties and other men's accessories. Also cool collectibles such as a coco-cola cooler, large ice tongs and ceramics. He's also been creating some cool repurposed and up-cycled art too.

So if you are searching for vintage items, need a cool gift from our repurposed items for home decor or looking for a simple gift like our coffee dyed serving boards, then please come visit our booth at the Thieves Market.

Thieves Market started many moons ago up in Cave Creek. I remember attending some of the very first markets. However, it has grown so much that they have taken over a large parking lot at Big Surf in Tempe.

There... you will find all vintage and antique period! Whether it's recycled or sold "as-is" it is all vintage and antique all the time.

We will NOT have any of our coffee or confections at this event since it is dedicated to vintage flea style...however we will keep you posted when we are at the next event with our coffee and treats!

Please stop by and say hello...we would love to meet you and see you there!

Address: 1500 North McClintock, Tempe AZ (Big Surf parking lot)

A New Year, A New Review

 It's me!

It's me!

As I'm sitting here sipping my coffee (Lolita's Blend...shameless plug) I've been reviewing last year. Wow...did 2016 happen already? Where does the time go? My Mom always said that I needed to cherish each moment and don't wish your life away because it will fly by in a flash.

It's that time of year where everyone is looking for a fresh start. Lose weight, more exercise, de-clutter & organize and start anew. I try my best to plan both personally & professionally....goals I wish to accomplish each year. Most years...I wasn't successful. I looked at the goals and saw many failures. However, I found that I never took the time to review the year before, see some of the goals I did complete and be thankful for what I did accomplish. As well as recounting all the wonderful things that happened during that time. Sometimes I met part of my goal but didn't look at it that way...I saw failure. Not anymore....

 A great resolution!

A great resolution!

2016 was about a new beginning. We moved back to Arizona to be closer to family, revamped Johnny Lolita's and Johnny has been focusing on his consultancy-Career Coaching. Although we left our recruitment world, it never left John...it followed him everywhere. So in addition of assisting me on the coffee/confections side...he's continuing his career coaching business. (Click here). In which I can assist him from time to time.

Each year, there has been one thing that many who preach the power of goal setting, building your business, etc is to be a little more vulnerable and tell the world exactly what you're doing. I never wanted to for fear it was too personal...won't help me reach my goal,...why discuss it? In reading further, many explain that if no one knows what you're wanting to accomplish, how are you going to get there? This year, I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and opening up.

A quick review of 2016 and things we are thankful for:

  • Back in AZ and reconnecting with friends & family.
  • Started Johnny Lolita's and began building locally.
  • Successfully started to sell roasted coffee locally (Phoenix metro) via online sales, word-of-mouth, social media & events.
  • Maintained our current customers in TX, NM, PA, NY, GA, DC, TN, WA, FL, CO & CA.
  • Took my Food Handlers course, & received certification for cottage kitchen and began selling my confections and baked goods locally. Excited that it's been successful and building quickly.
  • Started custom gift containers and have sold to corporate accounts, realtors and individuals.
  • Did a couple of large events ( wedding & corporate) and sold "favors" & "thank you" gifts to attendees.

When I take the time to review...I feel I am making progress. I appreciate everyone who has contacted me and given me the opportunity to roast fresh coffee and/or bake items for themselves, for gifts or some sort of event. Without you all OR "y'all...Johnny Lolita's would not be here.

I truly L❤️VE what I am doing now. I love creating things that will put a smile on someone's face, I love talking to be people about "The Art of Coffee & Entertaining at home." The ability to create fun & creative ways to deliver gifts....I could blather on.

Now here comes the hard part for me. Opening up and letting you in on my dreams I have for Johnny Lolita's. Okay....here it goes.

Goals for Johnny Lolita's:

  • Have a small building (lease) with a commercial catering kitchen so I can build upon my confections/baking side of business
  • Start "Coffee parties" at customers' homes to educate on coffee, brewing & other fun accessories for the home.
  • Providing blogs on entertaining at home with coffee, and other fun ideas for the home.
  • Partcipate in at least 16 "boutique/events" to sell our products.
  • Continue marketing our online sales of fresh roasted coffee shipped to your door.
  • Market our local delivery of fresh roasted coffee to your home or office.
  • Obtain a vintage trailer or some sort of mobile vehicle to revamp and utilize at events as well as weddings, birthdays or corporate events selling our fresh roasted coffee and sweets.
  • Create new products (coffee accessories or other home products) to sell online.
 This would be cool.

This would be cool.

The list above are my top goals I wish to accomplish for Johnny Lolita's in 2017. There are some lofty goals however I am willing to do the hard work it takes to see this become a reality. Of course I need your help...in your continued support of our small business. Letting us know if there is anything we can do for you.

Johnny and I wish to thank all of you who have purchased our products and have supported our business. We wish to grow so please share our story and our business with others. We have our business on all social media platforms so please feel free to share. Whether you're on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Pinterest...the one that is your "social media of choice" please invite others to be a part of our community. We thank you in advance and wish everyone an awesome 2017.

Pumpkin Spiced Latte...Crock Pot Style

The holidays are here!!! Cooler temps in the morning (at least that is what we have in Arizona). Thanksgiving is here and spending time with family & friends at home is upon us.

So many styles of crock pots available.

So many styles of crock pots available.

A time to be thankful. Thankful for your health, thankful for being with loved ones and thankful for all the blessing we have received this year.

My whole purpose about what I do with my coffee, sweets and gifts is enjoying and entertaining at home. And now...this is the perfect time of year with family and friends getting together for the holidays.

So what better time to share a great and easy recipe for your guests when they arrive....to walk in to a wonderful smell of spices wafting through the air. What's even better, you can make it ahead since you will slow cook in a crock pot. A Pumkin Spiced Latte. Here's the ingredients and directions on making this great tasting hot cup of spiced love (wink wink smiley face).

Pumpkin Spiced Latte-Crock Pot Style

Ingredients

  • 6 cups of whole milk (you can use 2%, soy or almond milk)
  • 6 cups of strongly brewed coffee (Johnny Lolita's Brazil Dark or Lolita's Blend would be awesome)
  • 1/2 cup of Pumkin purée
  • 1/4-1/2 cup of sugar ( depending on how sweet you want it)
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 3 cinnamon sticks

Directions

  • Combine coffee and milk in your crockpot.
  • in a separate bowl, whisk/whip together the pumpkin, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon and pour into crockpot.
  • Mix all ingredients well.
  • Add the cinnamon sticks.
  • Cover the crockpot and cook on high for 2 hours. If it seems like it's been boiling for a long time reduce the heat.
  • Ready to serve and enjoy.

This recipe will serve 15+ people. For the adults you can offer your favorite liquor to their spiced latte.

Pumpkin Spiced Latte ready to enjoy.

Pumpkin Spiced Latte ready to enjoy.

If you try this recipe, let me know how you served it and if you added additional "spirits". I would not suggest you save leftovers and re-heat. It will not keep and the coffee with the milk and spices will NOT taste good reheated.

I know this recipe is NOT for the coffee purist. I know you wish to smack my hand to even offer up this recipe. My thought is that you should enjoy your coffee, however you like to. If it's with cream, just sugar, honey etc. enjoy it your way. A wonderful way to serve lots of people.

So set up a small bar off to the side so people can serve themselves. Add regular coffee & decaf via coffee pot or create a small pou over station. Now....you can concentrate on getting your side dishes and turkey ready for the group.

I roast coffee twice a week and deliver and/or ship the following day. I would L❤️VE to roast your next order. AND....make a delicious sweet/treat and deliver locally to your home or office.

Gingerbread Houses That Sits On Your Mug

Do you know what goes great with a cup of fresh roasted coffee from Johnny Lolita's? How about a cute "Mug Hugger"!

 House on a mug

House on a mug

I started playing around with the idea this summer. Always planning for the holidays. This is my own stencil design that I put together. This is not some brand new craze....it has been done before by others.

However, I have been using an old family gingerbread recipe that makes the gingerbread stay consistent in size when baking and it has a great "ginger snap" taste.

I use a royal icing recipe, however I use a meringue powder verses egg whites so that you don't have to worry about eating it right away. It is a "food safe" alternative.

What a great gift to give someone you love. We can create a cute gift with a coffee mug, a mug hugger and some coffee! OR...you can mix it with our hot chocolate on a stick!

Realtor gifts, corporate gifts, family too

This make a great corporate gift or customer "thank you". Also great for realtors who are seeking some cute gifts they can give out with their business card attached.

Taking orders now and I will have on the website soon.

Sharing Some Local L❤️VE

Yes...this has nothing to do with coffee or confections. However...Johnny and I want to share other things too. We really want this to be a place to learn...not only about coffee and sweets...but about cool stuff we might create or find along the way. Last weekend was a day of exploring and finding an adorable and unique shop!

 Johnny at Big Earl's

Johnny at Big Earl's

We decided to head up to Cave Creek for the day. We used to live in the area and hadn't had a chance to visit since we've moved back. Wow! Has the little town of Cave Creek grown. It is filled with delicious eateries and unique shops.

We had lunch at a favorite place of ours "Big Earl's" for a tasty hamburger. Big Earl's was a great place to have breakfast, lunch or dinner. It was one of our most popular stops when we lived up here. It was our reward for all the hill climbing we had accomplished on our bicycles.

The town of Cave Creek reminds me of a little resort/vacation town. Lots of people and activity all around. A great place to sit and watch cool vintage cars and beautiful motorcycles cruise the main part of town.

We decided to walk off our lunch and check out what's new. Super cool and unique shops...nothing "touristy" lots of handmade items and a couple of high end boutique stores for men and women carrying some of the hottest western inspired looks from brands I see in "Cowboys And Indians" magazine.

I wanted to tell you about a cute and unique shop tucked right off the main street. What caught my eye was the small sign they had out on the sidewalk. Attached was a sock that had something obnoxious printed on it and I started laughing. I had to go in. Needless to say, Johnny and I spent an hour in there. I've added a bunch of pictures....just enjoy. I loved all of them, even the foul mouthed one. I know, I'm sorry.

 Walls of socks

The shop is called Sockfish Trading Company. What a fun store that is all about socks...and other fun items. I love dark humor and I love obnoxious quotes and comments. I love that I can wear what I am feeling today and it's hidden under my jeans.

 Great prices

Another cool thing is that sometimes the really obnoxious comment is stated at the bottom of the sock that is tucked away in your boots or favorite shoes. So you know it's there.

What a great gift to add this holiday season. Especially for men. In the corporate world they are restricted to suits and ties. They can get a little wild with a pair of brightly colored socks. I love to see a wild pair of socks peep out from a gentleman's suit. Shows their fun & crazy side.

It was just a fun place to shop and enjoy all the fun items they sell. They had bright colored baseball style caps, scarves and purses for women. Additional cheeky items like these gum packs with funny slogans printed. What a great place to put together a fun gift basket.

Pumpkin Spice & Everything's Nice Creamer

Homemade Pumpkin Spice in mason jar

Homemade Pumpkin Spice in mason jar

You had me at Pumpkin Spice! So far I am off to a great start in October! At least in Johnny's eyes. This man loves his sweets, however, he is not a chocolate kinda guy...or a super sticky greasy cookie sorta man either. He loves fruit pies and cakes (must have butter creme frosting, don't give him cream cheese frosting) and candy. Well...he likes a lot more than he doesn't like. BUT...he is a pumpkin pie man and I won him over making pumpkin pie from scratch over the weekend. So right now, I am on the pedestal. (family inside joke)

Adding the pumpkin purée, spices and cinnamon stick

Adding the pumpkin purée, spices and cinnamon stick

Being that I roast coffee, enjoy everything coffee and want wonderful people like you to enjoy coffee at home, I wanted to maintain my "pumpkin theme" this month and provide you a recipe at home for your very own pumpkin spice creamer.

It's super easy and likely you have all the ingredients-minus the pumpkin puree. I roasted several mini pie pumpkins so I have plenty or puree frozen and ready when I need it. However, if you want to make your own pumpkin puree, go check out my blog "It's October...It's All About Pumpkin" on how to make pumpkin puree OR grab a can of pumpkin puree at the store...it will work just as well.

Also, the recipe calls for pumpkin pie spice. Several options, if you have pumpkin spice already in your cabinet...great! Or, you can buy pumpkin spice at the store. However, I made a batch of pumpkin spice to keep on hand for the holiday season. Most likely (especially if you're a baker) you have the ingredients in your cabinet. I will include the Pumpkin Spice mix below the Pumpkin Spice Creamer.

The recipe calls for your choice of milk/cream. I actually used a combo of whole milk and heavy whipping cream. (because that is what I found in the refrigerator)

You combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and begin whisking the ingredients together. I also threw in a cinnamon stick...it's optional. Place the heat on medium...you do not want this to boil. I would whisk the ingredients for about 2-3 minutes.

Next, take the saucepan off the heat and let it cool. Then place in a heat resistant container to keep in the refrigerator. The creamer will keep up to five days if you can keep it that long (wink wink smiley face).

I used a mason jar and placed in the fridge. When you are ready to use be sure to give a couple of shakes to your creamer to mix the ingredients since they will settle.

One of my favorite ceramic creamers...a dachshund!

One of my favorite ceramic creamers...a dachshund!

Next morning, I was ready to enjoy. I used my very special creamer holder...a dachshund that was given to me by my wonderful sister-in-law, Tami. I enjoyed my coffee with a couple of neighbors to see what they thought. It was a hit! The taste was sweet enough but not over the top. It tastes really good and fresh. Much different than the actual store bought kind.

 I love this little guy...

I love this little guy...

I don't use creamer in my coffee. I typically enjoy my coffee black and time to time with creamer. I don't use any sugar. However, this creamer was great it didn't make the coffee too sweet. It was a nice change for me.

The big bonus was gathering people at my house to sit and enjoy some coffee and fun conversation. One of the big reasons I roast coffee...so you can enjoy at home with family & friends. Enjoy your coffee the way you like to drink it...whether cream & sugar...just cream or black...enjoy with someone and create a great memory.

Pumpkin Spice Creamer

Ingredients

Pumpkin Spice Creamer in my coffee=Yum!

Pumpkin Spice Creamer in my coffee=Yum!

  • 1 1/2 cups of half-and-half (you can use milk, heavy cream, soy, almond, your choice)
  • 2 Tablespoons pumpkin puree (purchase at the store or make your own)
  • 2-4 Tablespoons brown sugar (I used 2 Tablespoons)
  • 2 Tablespoons of maple syrup
  • 2 Teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice ( I made from scratch and have the recipe below)
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon stick (optional)

Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and turn heat to medium-high. Begin whisking ingredients and stir 2-3 minutes. Do not let the milk/cream boil. Simmer is fine. Set saucepan off heat to cool and place in airtight, heat resistant container. When you are ready to use be sure to shake up contents as the homemade ingredients tend to settle.

Pumpkin Pie Spice

Ingredients

  • 1/4 Cup ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoon ground ginger
  • 4 Teaspoons ground nutmeg **( I used 2 1/2 Teaspoons of freshly grated nutmeg)
  • 2 Teaspoons ground allspice
  • 2 Teaspoons ground cloves

Combine all ingredients in a small bowling whisk until well blended. Store in air-tight jar. **If you use freshly grated nutmeg, you may wish to add slightly less. The flavor can be more intense.

I would absolutely L-O-V-E any updates and comments when you make it. Please feel free to share on our Facebook page or Instagram.

Happy National Coffee Day

Ahhh......Coffee! The world's most life-giving and legal drug. Coffee makes me awesome, Coffee solves everything, Life begins after my coffee, Coffee-it maintains my sunny personality! (wink, wink, smiley face)

IMG_1232.JPG

I've always loved coffee, even as a child, my parents fixed me coffee. It was more milk and sugar than coffee then...however I always loved the flavor.

I know we have these "National Day Of ___________ (Fill in the blank). Donut Day, Pizza Day, Beer Day, Acorn Squash Day, Make Your Bed Day (Yes, it is real)...I can go on and on.

Regardless, this is a great day, C-O-F-F-E-E!

So early this morning before I begin roasting, I am enjoying a cup of our Brazil Dark Roast. It's a cloudy day and a sprinkling of light rain every now and then. A perfect morning.

IMG_1122.JPG

I'm very thankful where I am. I love doing what I do and I hope to continue and grow this tiny little business. I am thankful for this wonderful cup of coffee bean goodness and constantly amazed at how this coffee was planted and raised thousand of miles away, watched over, cared for and then harvested. The farmers that work so tirelessly to deliver a perfect cup to their customers around the world.

To honor National Coffee Day, I am donating money to farmers to plant coffee trees to help build a sustainable environment. To continue the ability to deliver wonderful coffee to my coffee cup each day!

Now...back to my coffee....

Coffee & Caramel Together...With A Little Sea Salt.

I've been at it again....Playing with food. (wink, wink, smiley face). Actually, I challenged myself to create a caramel sauce that would be great for ice cream, dipping fruit (like green apples, yum!) or just sticking a spoon in. However...I wanted a true strong flavor of coffee and I think I nailed it.

 Beautiful color, wonderful coffee flavor.

Beautiful color, wonderful coffee flavor.

Behold... (dramatic entry music) Lolita's Coffee Caramel Sauce with a little sea salt. I've had several taste testers sampling the sauce. Of course Johnny said that the only one that should matter is him. It really came out smooth with a very strong coffee flavor. I am always discouraged when something touts "coffee flavor" and you really can't taste the coffee. This will not disappoint. The coffee lovers in your life will love it too.

I added a hint of sea salt that really sets it off. Enjoy with fresh fruit...it's great for dipping. You could also dip some of your favorite graham crackers or short bread. Top your ice cream with a spoonful of caramel sauce...or maybe two spoonfuls.

I'm really excited and perfect timing for the Fall and Holiday season. It will make a great gift for your favorite teacher (along with an apple). Perfect to give to client, customers or favorite accounts in the corporate world. I will package in a flat style 1/2 pint size. This cool "big mouth" jar is perfect should you plan to dip straight from the jar...there is plenty of room.

 Ready to give...

Ready to give...

We will have it up on our website soon. However, if you're interested and need to order, feel free to reach out to me via email shawn@johnnylolitas.com. I am happy to take any pre-orders or to discuss needs for events, clients or customer "Thank You's"...I am happy to accommodate all.
