A New Year, A New Review

It's me!

It's me!

As I'm sitting here sipping my coffee (Lolita's Blend...shameless plug) I've been reviewing last year. Wow...did 2016 happen already? Where does the time go? My Mom always said that I needed to cherish each moment and don't wish your life away because it will fly by in a flash.

It's that time of year where everyone is looking for a fresh start. Lose weight, more exercise, de-clutter & organize and start anew. I try my best to plan both personally & professionally....goals I wish to accomplish each year. Most years...I wasn't successful. I looked at the goals and saw many failures. However, I found that I never took the time to review the year before, see some of the goals I did complete and be thankful for what I did accomplish. As well as recounting all the wonderful things that happened during that time. Sometimes I met part of my goal but didn't look at it that way...I saw failure. Not anymore....

A great resolution!

A great resolution!

2016 was about a new beginning. We moved back to Arizona to be closer to family, revamped Johnny Lolita's and Johnny has been focusing on his consultancy-Career Coaching. Although we left our recruitment world, it never left John...it followed him everywhere. So in addition of assisting me on the coffee/confections side...he's continuing his career coaching business. (Click here). In which I can assist him from time to time.

Each year, there has been one thing that many who preach the power of goal setting, building your business, etc is to be a little more vulnerable and tell the world exactly what you're doing. I never wanted to for fear it was too personal...won't help me reach my goal,...why discuss it? In reading further, many explain that if no one knows what you're wanting to accomplish, how are you going to get there? This year, I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and opening up.

A quick review of 2016 and things we are thankful for:

  • Back in AZ and reconnecting with friends & family.
  • Started Johnny Lolita's and began building locally.
  • Successfully started to sell roasted coffee locally (Phoenix metro) via online sales, word-of-mouth, social media & events.
  • Maintained our current customers in TX, NM, PA, NY, GA, DC, TN, WA, FL, CO & CA.
  • Took my Food Handlers course, & received certification for cottage kitchen and began selling my confections and baked goods locally. Excited that it's been successful and building quickly.
  • Started custom gift containers and have sold to corporate accounts, realtors and individuals.
  • Did a couple of large events ( wedding & corporate) and sold "favors" & "thank you" gifts to attendees.

When I take the time to review...I feel I am making progress. I appreciate everyone who has contacted me and given me the opportunity to roast fresh coffee and/or bake items for themselves, for gifts or some sort of event. Without you all OR "y'all...Johnny Lolita's would not be here.

I truly L❤️VE what I am doing now. I love creating things that will put a smile on someone's face, I love talking to be people about "The Art of Coffee & Entertaining at home." The ability to create fun & creative ways to deliver gifts....I could blather on.

Now here comes the hard part for me. Opening up and letting you in on my dreams I have for Johnny Lolita's. Okay....here it goes.

Goals for Johnny Lolita's:

  • Have a small building (lease) with a commercial catering kitchen so I can build upon my confections/baking side of business
  • Start "Coffee parties" at customers' homes to educate on coffee, brewing & other fun accessories for the home.
  • Providing blogs on entertaining at home with coffee, and other fun ideas for the home.
  • Partcipate in at least 16 "boutique/events" to sell our products.
  • Continue marketing our online sales of fresh roasted coffee shipped to your door.
  • Market our local delivery of fresh roasted coffee to your home or office.
  • Obtain a vintage trailer or some sort of mobile vehicle to revamp and utilize at events as well as weddings, birthdays or corporate events selling our fresh roasted coffee and sweets.
  • Create new products (coffee accessories or other home products) to sell online.
This would be cool.

This would be cool.

The list above are my top goals I wish to accomplish for Johnny Lolita's in 2017. There are some lofty goals however I am willing to do the hard work it takes to see this become a reality. Of course I need your help...in your continued support of our small business. Letting us know if there is anything we can do for you.

Johnny and I wish to thank all of you who have purchased our products and have supported our business. We wish to grow so please share our story and our business with others. We have our business on all social media platforms so please feel free to share. Whether you're on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Pinterest...the one that is your "social media of choice" please invite others to be a part of our community. We thank you in advance and wish everyone an awesome 2017.

Gingerbread Houses That Sits On Your Mug

Do you know what goes great with a cup of fresh roasted coffee from Johnny Lolita's? How about a cute "Mug Hugger"!

House on a mug

House on a mug

I started playing around with the idea this summer. Always planning for the holidays. This is my own stencil design that I put together. This is not some brand new craze....it has been done before by others.

However, I have been using an old family gingerbread recipe that makes the gingerbread stay consistent in size when baking and it has a great "ginger snap" taste.

I use a royal icing recipe, however I use a meringue powder verses egg whites so that you don't have to worry about eating it right away. It is a "food safe" alternative.

What a great gift to give someone you love. We can create a cute gift with a coffee mug, a mug hugger and some coffee! OR...you can mix it with our hot chocolate on a stick!

Realtor gifts, corporate gifts, family too

This make a great corporate gift or customer "thank you". Also great for realtors who are seeking some cute gifts they can give out with their business card attached.

Taking orders now and I will have on the website soon.

Weddings, Showers, Corporate Events And All Parties

Coffee bag sample & salted caramel bag sample

Coffee bag sample & salted caramel bag sample

I wanted to share (shameless plug) some of the fun things we are doing with our time. I L❤️VE roasting coffee and I L❤️VE making sweets and baked goods. Like I say all the time...Coffee goes great with something sweet!

It started back in El Paso assisting someone with a small gift giving event for a non-profit organization and now has grown to a big part of what we do. Which I'm thrilled...because I've always loved creating gifts of sweets and coffee and present them in unique ways depending on the event.

Since then...we've done several weddings with coffee in small coffee bags or mini burlap sacks. We've done a bridal shower with decaf coffee favors along with the caffeinated option that was a big hit.

Now, we've added some of our confections such as our handmade salted caramels, hot chocolate on a stick and mini jars of our new salted coffee caramel sauce...YUM!

Johnny's Serving Boards Are Back!

Dying boards with coffee.

Dying boards with coffee.

Johnny & I are always looking to repurpose SOMETHING! I love getting old broken down furniture and making it new. Or taking an item that was meant for one thing and turning it into something fun and cool.

We are looking to grow our little business in new directions. There is so much we enjoy to create and we want to share with you. We have some big goals in store and need your help. By purchasing some of these cool items (this is the start of one such item).....you will help us get closer to our goal. I will share our new ideas very soon. (Wink wink smiley face)

Serving board with copper bear and instructions

Serving board with copper bear and instructions

Now...we are bringing back our Serving Boards. These boards are made from pine, sanded to a smooth finish. They are then dyed with coffee grounds and oiled with food grade oil. These boards are more of a rustic way to display your olives, cheese and meats...or any other food items with style.

They are easy to care for... Hand wash & dry, do not use in dishwasher. Wood will darken with use. You may oil from time to time using only food grade (butcher block) mineral oils.

They make great gifts wrapped and the price is $17.00. Add some coffee samples...I'll warp it and makes a beautiful gift for a wedding, bridal shower or any other occasion. . With coffee samples and wrapped, the price is $28.00.

We are currently working on them and if you are interested in one and wish to pre-order, write in the comments below. You do not pay ahead...this is to hold one for you since we do tend to sell these quickly. When completed, I will let you know and send an invoice. We can deliver locally in the Phoenix metro area or ship anywhere in the US. (Additional postage and delivery fees apply)

Add some coffee and we will wrap it up! Great gift

We will be putting together other unique items for sale as well to help us achieve our next goal. Thank you so much in advance and will be following up with another post about our new additional venture.

Happy 4th Of July

image.jpg

Happy 4th! Our second holiday of the summer season. Well....technically Memorial Day was in the Spring. But in the Southwest & West...it's already hot! Time to spend with family & friends, barbecue competitions amongst neighbors and of course fireworks.

Ah yes, fireworks! We all love them and as a kid, we all wanted to shoot them off. Of course my best friend and I were the targets of our older brothers who liked to chase us with fireworks.

Because of the heat, you may not be thinking of hot coffee. But have you ever made cold brew? Cold brew is a great way to make coffee concentrate to be utilized as an ice coffee OR if you are craving the hot cup in the morning, all you need to do is add some boiling water to a 1/3 of the coffee concentrate and instantly you have hot coffee.

The other awesome thing about cold brew is that the same coffee you drink everyday hot, will result in a completely different taste and profile when cold brew. The taste is sweeter and smooth with no acidity. The chemical reaction that takes places when heating the grounds gives you the acidity. Cold brew doesn't. Another great thing is it will last up to 6 weeks in the fridge.

In our next quick blog, I'll discuss how to make cold brew simply at home. In the meantime, Johnny & I wish you a happy and safe 4th of July. Remember our vets & pets when it comes to fireworks.

We have two new roasts we are introducing.

We are offering a wonderful Brazil dark roast. This estate has consistently offered high quality coffee and has consistent,y won numerous awards. A wonderful cup for the dark/robust coffee drinker. With tasting notes of Chocolate, creamy body and acidity.

Our other new coffe is from Costa Rica. This is a first for us in roasting Costa Rica beans and it will not disappoint. This is a wonderful medium roast that has a very clean taste. The tasting notes are sweet with a vanilla aftertaste and very bright. It's nice as it's different from our Brazil/Guatemala, other central Regions and Sumatra. A great addition.

Please come in and try some your self. Don't forget we have our other amazing coffees available.

On special for $11.00. Some come in and grab a pound or two.

We are always offering sample of our "coffee of the day" and would love to talk about our beans and our roasts. So be sure to stop in. We have lots of new things in such as Moka Pots, French Press and coffee accessories. Beautiful and unique gift baskets for any occasion and also great gift for clients. We finished an order for a medical company that was giving small "thank you gifts" to their current and future customers. So be sure to stop in and I am happy to assist you any way I can.

What's Up, People!

I hope many of you have been enjoying your summer. For those who like in El Paso or in the Southwest...I hope you've had a chance to escape to your favorite beaches or mountains this summer. Right now, I'd La La LOVE to escape to Santa Fe NM. I love staying at the La Fonda Hotel parking my care and spend most of my days walking all around the plaza or taking a bicycle ride to near destinations.

However, here I sit realizing that before you know it, The Holidays will be fast upon us so I am spending my July preparing for the holidays with beautiful handmade gifts to give and to add to a beautiful container for gift giving.

So what's up? This week I wanted to offer something for my wonderful customers. Our awesome Ethiopian coffee. As I mentioned before, it makes a wonderful hot cup. However, try it iced. The floral fragrant and " juicy berry" taste makes for an enjoyable tall glass in this hot and humid weather we are experiencing here (El Paso).

This wonderful top grade bean is sold by the pound for $14.50. This week we have it for $11.00. So be sure to grab a pound while supplies last. As you know we roast fresh weekly.

image.jpg

Another thing new this week is our new toy! Our Bialetta Moka Pot Espresso. This is a 6 cup espresso pot that helps you make the best espresso. Of course with a little help with some fresh roasted Johnny Lolita's coffee!

I'll be posting a video soon on how to use the Moka Pot shortly. I was so excited I grabbed one and took it home. Quick read on the instructions and it was very easy to. The Moka Pot worked perfectly and I sat with Johnny and enjoyed a wonderful espresso courtesy of the Bialetti Moka Pot and Johnny Lolita's hand roasted coffee.

Check out the cute espresso cups we have for sale. Looks like a crumpled paper cup.

Come by for a visit and grab one of these Moka Pots along with some great hand roasted coffee, other awesome coffee accessories, great art, vintage items and more! Remember we are inside the Elegant Consignment Shop at the shops at Placita Santa Fe. Open Tues through Sat 10-5

Keeping Your Coffee Fresh!

Customers are always asking me how to keep their fresh roasted beans fresh? So many thoughts out there....should I put it in the fridge? If you want it to taste like "last night's Red Enchiladas" you can. 😁 Should I store in the freezer....well yes, but there are some limitations.

First off...best recommendation is to purchase fresh roasted coffee as you need. Purchase what you'll need for the next 1-2 weeks. Keeping whole bean.....and grind what you need that day for coffee is ideal too! We grind our coffee every time we are ready to have a cup. Even if we have it twice a day..... we grind as we need. Johnny and I are looking into coffee subscriptions locally and out-of-state where you purchase on a monthly basis and you don't have to think about it and receive a pound or two...whatever you need. Locally, we will even deliver! (Details coming soon)

ideally it is best to keep air, moisture heat and light away from your beans...In that order! So it is NOT good to refrigerate or freeze your daily supply of coffee. Moisture will begin to develop and break down your bean. If you've purchased a large amount of coffee, you can take a portion and place it in a resealable bag and freeze. However, when you are ready to use, pull it out but do not refreeze. You can freeze one time but trying to freeze again, then, you will start to build moisture and ruin the beans. This only applies to whole beans not ground. Ground coffee begins loosing it's essence quickly and freezing in ground form is never recommended.

Placing your coffee in a cupboard is typically what I recommend. A cool, dry and dark place. So stay away from the cupboards that are near the stove or on a wall that gets the direct sun from outside.

Excessive air is one of the biggest "spoilers" of coffee. It's what can bring your beans to "staleness" quickly. We now have an awesome product for your beans. It's a Coffee Vac canister. These canisters work the same way as the one way degassing valves. Letting out the gases without allowing oxygen in. It's easy to use and helps maintain coffee freshness from your first cup to your last!

We started selling them and one of our customers came in the other day and told me how much she loved her Coffee Vac canister. She can tell a big difference in the continued fresh taste of her roasted coffee beans.

image.jpg

So, the next time you're in the shop, be sure to grab a canister along with your pound of beans. It'll continue keeping the freshness of your coffee!
